You’ve arrived at Gilroy’s. The beer is flowing, people are dancing and smiling, and all around you, the air is filled with live music, laughter, and mouth-watering aromas. At some point during the afternoon, Gil inevitably stops by your table to personally greet you and raise a glass together with you. Life is great at Gilroy’s.
But how did all of this happiness come about? Who is Santa Clause’s alter-ego? And can we be certain it truly exists?
Yes, Gilroy’s Brewery certainly does exist and continues to thrive. Founded in the year 2000 (or 1880 – depending on which calendar you follow), Gilroy’s Brewery was one of the first micro-breweries in South Africa. The Brewery was established by Master Brewer Steve Gilroy in his printing factory in Roodepoort, Gauteng, and was met with instant recognition and favour.
In the 2001 publication of Diner’s Club Beer Drinkers Guide, taste expert B.J. Lankwarden awarded the Gilroy Serious Dark Ale a 9 out of 10 – making it the highest rated beer in the Southern Hemisphere.
In 2008, the Brewery relocated to its current location in sunny Muldersdrift. Here, the pub, restaurant and general store opened and the venue quickly became one of Johannesburg’s premier destination spots.
Due to the success of the Pub and Restaurant, the West Rand Tourism Council have awarded Gilroy’s numerous awards for “Best Tourism Experience”, “Best Restaurant Al Fresco”, and “Best Overall Venue”. Gilroy’s also won the British Telegraph “Best of British” award.
In 2011, in the official James Bond novel ‘Carte Blanche’, the Gilroy Serious Dark Ale attained the highest honour of being chosen as James Bond’s drink of choice in South Africa. The author, Jeffery Deaver said, “I drank the Gilroy Serious and was hooked from the first sip. I included in the novel because Bond insists on only the best!”
The shield on the Gilroy Coat-of-Arms illustrates the origin, profession, and ethic of the Gilroy Family. The top half of the shield proudly displays the three medieval dolphins, granted by heraldic law to the Gilroys of County Fermanagh, Ireland a long, long time ago. The beer tankard signifies that we are a brewing family, with a history that stretches back as far as memory will allow. The gauntlet, with the raised mid-digit, serves as a friendly challenge to any other brewer to make a better beer. We don’t think it’s possible.
Our strapline is “120 Years Behind the Times”, which captures the Gilroy ethic perfectly. We strive for authenticity and traditional values in everything that we do. Our focus is on forming real and lasting relationships with our guests, and after a pint (or six) they’re no longer just guests – they’re friends.
LEGENDARY BEER, DELICIOUS FOOD, GREAT VIBE
Why go anywhere else?
The kind of ale that won wars, cured colds, sore holes, spots on the belly, boils on the bum… and charmed beautiful women.
Gilroy beers are 100% natural – brewed using only the finest malted barley grains, hops, yeasts, water, and of course love. With every batch, our team diligently observes the Irish Brewing Purity Laws – as written by Steve Gilroy himself, sometime during the last century.

"The Time has come," the Walrus said to rapturous applause, "to pop down to Gilroy's for the Four o' Clock Up Yours."
And so aboard the Owl's yacht, they unfurled full-sail, and sped across the dirt road for a pint of Gilroy's ale.
When finally, the Owl said, "I think I've had my fill. We must return tomorrow for another pint with Gil."
